In those two days, you can take your Salsa Dancing to a whole new level…while serving as an ambassador for salsa-lovers from other cities & countries!

INSTRUCTORS:

*Yesenia Fernandez—Afro-Cuban, Rumba, Natural Body Movement

*Anara Frank—Horton Technique for Salseros: exercises to increase core strength and improve flexibility, length, spinning, musicality and more

Program Highlights:

–Semi-private group instruction, divided by level

–Options to take single workshops or full camp

–High quality instructors who know how to TEACH as well as DANCE!
–Exchange and interaction with salseros from different cities & countries, and an opportunity to welcome them into the NYC salsa scene
–FREE snacks & refreshments provided

Location: Champions Studios, 257 W 39th St between 7th & 8th Aves

Dance Camp Includes: Each day there will be 3 physically active workshops and 1 sitting/interactive (with snacks & refreshments provided). Each workshop will be 80 minutes in length, with short break in between. Workshops will run from 2-8 pm, with a new one beginning every 1.5 hours. NYC/NJ Dancers can choose to register for single workshops or for full days of camp, and can also request to be part of the Ambassador Program.

Workshops Include: NY-style Salsa (on2), Cha Cha Cha, Musicality & Use of Clave, Afro-Cuban & Rumba, Contemporary & Horton Technique, Spinning, Flexibility, History & Evolution of Salsa & its Afro-Cuban roots.

NYC/NJ Ambassador Program: Salseros from around the world long to dance here, where it all started. But for many, this scene can be an intimidating experience, making it hard to enjoy to the fullest. But imagine how different it would be if they arrived at their first club or party and some one they knew was there to introduce them to other dancers and make them feel welcome.  And if there were ten people like that who were reaching out to them throughout their stay here, they would have the time of their lives. That’s exactly the environment we want to create for these dancers…and you can help us! If you love dancing, are a regular member of the scene, and have a friendly, out-going personality, you can be an Ambassador and participate in the workshops at about half the price. Regular Dance Camp Costs:

2 days of instruction: 12 hours of personalized instruction

$170 for members of MetaMovements or regular students of any featured instructor

I remember when Mambo Cafe was the coolest place to go Salsa dancing. On a Saturday night everyone would be there and there would be an awesome live band like Caraballi playing. The dance floor would be packed… but not with throngs of people pretending they know how to dance and stepping all over your feet… but with dancers. Everyone from the very beginners to the professionals would go out and have fun. As an added bonus everyone stayed in the dance line they had chosen so there were no toe-crushing injuries.

Let me tell you this was not the case this past Saturday and has not been the case at Mambo Cafe for a while. It was advertised as “the best salsa night in Dallas.” Ya I guess that would be true if the best Salsa night in Dallas includes half crappy Salsa band and half Reggaeton. Lame. There was even this one short little guy who tried to push us off the dance floor in hopes of showing us up. I don’t think he got the memo that dancing is supposed to be about having fun. Extra lame.

I guess you guys probably already know if you are in the Salsa dance world, but venues change so often for good dancing. It is kind of frustrating because there is no quality control except for non attendance. But that leaves our Salsa dancing community scattered and separated. Is anyone else fed up with this and wishing our dancing community would come together?

I want to share with you a really great experience I had on Tuesday night. Jay and I had just finished teaching Salsa class at Tango and Chacha’s dance studio and we knew one of our friends who had moved to Houston was throwing a party at Inca. Sort of spur of the moment we decided to go.

I was totally surprised at how many great Salsa dancers there were who came out! Usually really good dancers don’t go out much because they dance so much otherwise that going out isn’t the same as when you are an amateur. There were new faces from different cities and the place was full but not packed. It was really wonderful and the best night of dancing I have had in a while.

It’s time for the Summer SALSA SOCIAL at Clips ‘n’ Hips in Oklahoma City. Party starts at 9:00pm Saturday, June 20, 2009.

This weekend is the Grand Opening of the Rhythmology Salsa Lounge in Westbury, NY.  International Salsa Sensation and Dance Guru, Alfred Peña will be hosting this week long celebration and will be offering a full day of high energy salsa and latin classes for all levels!

Its almost time for the June Salsa Social at the Paper Moon Dance Center. Last month was awesome! They are looking to make this month’s salsa social even better. Vera Rowe and the gang at Paper Moon Dance Center are looking forward to seeing you all there. 

There are Salsa workshops starting at 6pm on Saturday before the social starts. Prices are $10 each and they are well worth it. I took some lessons with Vera a while back an I can say that she was one of the best female dance instructors I have ever taken lessons from. She is truly a world class dancer and I highly recommend soaking up every lesson she has to offer! 

Social starts at 9pm and is $10 per person (or free if you attended any of the workshops).  It’s half price for students so bring you student Id and get in for only $5.  It will be held at the Paper Moon Dance Center, I included a link below to a map for you connivence, it’s actually not that hard to find.
